James' Hat.

So, I knit my hubby a hat.  He has a big head, so I like for his hats to be stretchy. I just made up a pattern using a broken rib pattern.  So, here it is!

James' hat

Skills needed,

knit, purl, k2tog, p2tog, knit in the round

materials needed

Size 10 16" circular needle

Size 10 dpns, or an extra size 10 circular needle.

two dk yarns held together

darning needle

Broken Rib Pattern

round 1- knit

round 2 - k1, p1 all the way around

repeat these two rounds.

So for the pattern,

Cast on 80 stitches.  knit in a rib pattern for 8 rows. After you knit 8 rounds, start the Broken Rib pattern. Knit in the broken rib pattern for as long as you want.  For instance, I knit mine about 8 inches.

For the decreases,

set up round, place a marker every 8 stitches.

the decrease row 1, knit to 2 stitches before marker, knit those two stitches together. Read the Side note.

row 2, knit

Repeat those two rows until 10 stitches remain.  Ending with row 1.

Side note, since I was decreasing on the patterned row, I would either k2tog or p2tog. I chose which stitch I was going to do based on the first stitch.  so if it was a knit, I k2tog. If it was a purl stitch, I p2tog. I think it would be just fine too. Do whatever works for you!  It's your hat!

When it become uncomfortable, Switch to dpns, or add the second circular needle.

Run the darning needle through the lives stitches and pull tight.  Weave in ends, and you have a hat!
